Spreading the message of peace

Spreading the message of peace

Mukesh
Mukesh Vassen
Mukesh Vassen’s day job is as legal adviser to the Speaker of the House in Parliament. Any spare time is spent doing service, teaching Art of Living courses and the accompanying practice of Sudarshan Kriya (“kriya”, a breathing technique that cleanses and harmonises the physical, mental and emotional levels).
The Art of Living is a humanitarian NGO, founded in the early ’80s by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar with the vision of creating a violence- and stress-free society. This is Mukesh’s story…
I grew up in Cape Town and was a young kid activist during the apartheid days. My dad was an attorney and used to represent most of the political prisoners, so the police used to watch us a lot. We got many death threats. I left home when I was 13, which was when they came to arrest me. I saw so many people die as a teenage boy; I remember how they killed a two-year-old child and said they thought it was a dog. And the Trojan horse thing, where they hid in boxes and killed a couple of kids. All of this left me with a lot of trauma and anger.
I went back to school when I was 19. After that I went to UCT. I have an arts, law and honours degree – plus a post-grad in peace research from Oslo. Having three degrees doesn’t mean you can cope with your life. After varsity I had a personal crisis which left me in quite a state. I had carried these feelings of anger with me over the years, to remind me of what I needed to do. I hadn’t yet realised that you don’t need to be in suffering to change the world.
Someone suggested I do the Art of Living (AOL) course during this difficult time, which is something I ordinarily would’ve avoided at all costs. I did it, and in six days felt a complete 180º turnaround. Everything dropped. University had made me very analytical and serious. After I did the course, my smile came back. I started to feel like a little kid; I didn’t walk, I bounced.
Until six months ago my job was as a legal adviser to Parliament, ensuring that the laws passed are in line with the constitution. My work requires a lot of focus and attention as you deal with very diverse matters. Now I’ve been seconded to the office of the Speaker, which is quite a bit more intense. I also advise the joint committee of ethics and members’ interests.
Building this country was important, so seeing that the values of the constitution are reflected in the laws that are passed makes a big difference. I like what I do – it’s a meaningful job. I usually work 12-hour days and on top of that I’m teaching AOL courses most evenings alongside my wife Gerlinde. I also organise international courses and handle the media for AOL. It’s interesting to see how my capacity keeps expanding. I can see my potential unfolding in my own life. I always joke that I became a teacher to show that if I can change, anybody can change.
I became a teacher in 2006 and I’ve taught over 5 000 people probably. Last year between January and June we taught 1 000 people, 700 of whom were kids. We taught the kids at the Cape Academy of Maths, Science and Technology – a school for gifted kids who come from impoverished communities.
Everybody’s looking for something, and that something is peace of mind. Sometimes they’re not aware that it’s peace of mind they’re looking for, but behind every desire is the wanting to be happy. And the AOL philosophy is very simple: it’s just to see a smile on every face, and to empower the individual to serve society. When your stress level decreases, your sense of belonging increases.
Reluctantly I accept that I am a leader. Somehow I have the ability to inspire people. I was a student leader as a kid, so when I did something naughty people would point to me and say, “you should be more responsible.” Now it’s different. I want to share what I’ve experienced and give people the tools to be able to experience that sense of peace. If we all did that the world would change.
Spirituality helps inculcate ethical leadership in business. It’s not something out there. It’s an innate feeling. From dealing with yourself you are able to help other people. Leadership is a willingness to stretch out your hand to help someone else and make a difference.
My goal is to spread AOL’s message to as many people as I can. And the beautiful thing is that it won’t conflict with anything you believe – it’ll just make you more effective in what you do. We have courses endorsed by Olympic athletes, specialised courses for members of Parliament and a conference of corporate culture for ethical leadership in business, held annually at the European summit.
I go to work so I can teach these courses; it’s what gives my life meaning. It’s like I was looking for something, and now I’ve found what I’m looking for. I have a guru in my life, which doesn’t mean I’m not going to have stormy seas. It just means I’m not going to capsize. He sometimes rocks the boat for me too.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has touched 350 million people, and he’s taught more than 350 000 prisoners worldwide. When there’s a trauma, food and medicine’s not enough. You need to deal with the mind. We don’t change what’s external; we kindle something inside.
I want to make a difference in this country. Coming from a childhood that was about campaigning for the right to vote, so much has changed. There’s a lot of beauty in the transformation that has happened. South Africa has a lot of potential for growth, and I’m optimistic.
It’s inspiring to see the different types of leadership that have emerged in a country where people were always made to feel that they had no place. The beauty in our diversity is that it makes for better leadership. In the arts, in politics, in literature, in everything – it’s all a contested terrain, which ultimately leads to better decisions.
Lastly, I’d like to share some knowledge…
There was a wise man who walked into a theatre and told a joke. Everybody laughed. A minute later he repeated the joke and a few people laughed. He repeated the joke a third time and nobody laughed. And then he asked, “If you can’t keep laughing for the same thing, why do you keep crying for the same thing?”

Guruji's Interview in India Today

Street movements can't replace Parliament, says Sri Sri Ravishankar

All eyes are on Uttar Pradesh as India's largest state is set to go to the hustings next year. While Rahul Gandhi blew the poll bugle at Phoolpur, there is yet another figure whose visit to the state raised many an eyebrow.Sri Sri Ravishankar, guruji to millions, toured some of the most important constituencies in the state exhorting people to rise up against corruption. Political parties of all hues tried to play the four day long visit in their favour but the spiritual leader didn't bat an eyelid, apart from cancelling his Amethi visit at the last moment. Now, in an exclusive interview to indiatoday.in, Sri Sri Ravishankar reveals what the pressure was all about.

Q. What was the aim of your UP yatra and have you achieved it?
A. Uttar Pradesh was part of my routine yatra which I have been doing for past several years. I give dates according to local people's request. No political motive should be attached to my U.P. tour. It is mainly spiritual and of course social causes are also raised, just as we have been doing everywhere else. Satsangs are always an uplifting experience and it was obvious by the response of the people.
Q. Why did you miss Amethi succumbing to political pressure?
A.Originally it was the people of Rae Bareilly who came to Bangalore to plan a Satsang. We have a large following there. They wanted to have 100,000 people in Rae Bareilly. While we were planning for this, we received an invitation from Amethi from Swami Harichaitanya, Tikarmafi Ashram for their Shatabdi Samaroh celebrations. Since the time available was very short we skipped Rae Bareilly and gave that same date to Amethi. When I landed in UP, our representative Swami Paramtej ji received a call from the swami in Amethi who informed about pressure being put on him. He was sorry and embarrassed to withdraw the invitation and was very uncomfortable even communicating that to us. I wanted to stir out of controversies and not create any problem. So I willingly agreed to postpone my visit to Amethi and he also sent a written regret.
Q. Have there been more such incidents of pressure on your movement?
A. I teach people how to handle pressure so I know how to handle pressure.
Q. Anna Hazare has clearly asked voters to not vote for the Congress. Would you also be as clear in your anti-corruption stance?
A. My stance is very clear. It is apolitical and against corruption and degradation of moral and ethical values. We have raised our voice against corruption, and we ourselves have been a victim of corruption here in Karnataka.
Q. Political parties are pitting you against each other in poll season…are you plan 'C' of the BJP?
A. I wouldn't like to comment on the perceptions and exhibition of ignorance of other people. Everybody has the right to express their own ignorance. But one thing I would like to say is that if I wanted to do anything political, I would do it hundred percent. If that were my intention, I would go to every one of the 75 districts, spend two days in each one and campaign for a whole 3 months. I am wise enough to know that no political windfall will occur in a 4-day yatra.
Q. An opinion often voiced is that spiritual leaders should not transcend their domain and should fight elections if they want to do politics…
A. Political leaders need not become nervous looking at the masses following spiritual leaders and make adverse comments which would only hurt them.
Q. How do you see the incidents of alleged corruption in Team Anna? Is there a lack of transparency and democracy in such movements?
A. It is for government agencies to take a call on that. Nobody is above law. Anyone who flouts the law will have to face the music. As far as I know, Team Anna people are very committed. You cannot brand them corrupt just because of some allegations in media. They are innocent unless they are proven otherwise.
Q. Team Anna is forming a constitution for itself and will expand the team to include all dominations- was that necessary, considering they are fighting for a basic issue like corruption which affects everybody in the same manner, more or less?
A.Expanding the team must be welcomed as decisions will be democratic and really represent the civil society in its true sense.
Q. Can a movement on streets- including fasting- replace Parliamentary procedures? Should it?
A. Not at all! Movements on street can exert pressure on the sleeping MPs to take action.
Q. Would you enter the Bigg Boss house a la Swami Agnivesh if invited?
A. I know of only one Big Boss and I am in his house all the time!

How Anger Hurts You- Sri Sri Ravishankar

How Anger Hurts You
Submit this story

You may remind yourself a hundred times that you shouldn't get angry, but when the emotion comes, you are unable to control it. It comes like a thunderstorm. Emotions are much more powerful than your thoughts. What can you do when anger rises in you?
Anger is a distortion of your true nature and it doesn't allow the self to shine forth fully. The structure of human consciousness or the mind is very similar to that of an atom. The positively charged protons and neutrons are in the center of the atom while the negatively charged particles are only on the circumference. Similarly, even in human consciousness, mind and life, all the negativities and vices are only in the periphery. Your true nature is peace and love.
Showing anger itself is not wrong, but being unaware of your anger only hurts you. Sometimes you can show anger purposefully. For example, a mother gets angry at her children and can act tough or shout at them if they put themselves in danger. There are situations that warrant showing anger, but when you get angry, have you observed what happens to you? You are shaken completely. Look at the consequences of getting angry. Are you happy with the decisions you have made or the words you have spoken in a state of anger? No, because you lose your total awareness. But if you are completely aware and are acting angry, that is fine.
Being in the Present Moment
All anger is about something which has already happened. Is it of any use getting angry about something which you cannot alter? The mind always vacillates between the past and the future. When the mind is in the past, it's angry about something that has already happened; but anger is meaningless as we can't alter the past. And when the mind is in the future, it's anxious about something that may or may not happen. When the mind is in the present moment, anxiousness and anger appear so meaningless.
Spiritual practices help you maintain your centeredness and not be shaken by small events. This is where a little knowledge about yourself, your mind, your consciousness and the root of distortion in our nature helps. It is when you are exhausted and stressed that you lose your nature and get angry. Every individual is bestowed with all the virtues in the world. They simply get covered-up by lack of understanding and stress. What is needed is just to uncover the virtues that are already there.
The Secret of the Breath
Breathing techniques and meditation are very effective in calming the mind. Learning something about our breath is very important. Our breath has a great lesson to teach us, which we have forgotten. For every rhythm in the mind, there is a corresponding rhythm in the breath and for every rhythm in the breath there is a corresponding emotion. So, when you cannot handle your mind directly, you can handle it through breath. Meditation is letting go of anger from the past and the events of the past. Meditation is accepting this moment and living every moment totally with depth. Often anger comes because you do not accept the present moment. Anger comes when one seeks too much of perfection. When you are joyful, you don't look for perfection. If you are always looking for perfection then you are not at the source of joy.
The world appears imperfect on the surface but, underneath, all is perfect. Perfection hides; imperfection shows off. The wise will not remain merely on the surface but will probe into the depth. Things are not blurred; your vision is blurred. Infinite actions prevail in the wholeness of consciousness, and yet the consciousness remains perfect, untouched. Realise this now and be natural.
