APPEAL-Bone Marrow/Stem Cells donor needed ASAP

Dear Family and Friends,

Recently our father, Ravi Luckoor, was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer called Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). We have been tracking this situation since last May 2011. At first we noticed his platelets were low, and as we tracked this we saw that his platelets kept falling. After a few Bone marrow biopsies it was finally confirmed that he has MDS. With a blood disorder such as this, the bone marrow cannot differentiate properly into White Blood Cells (WBC), Red Blood Cells (RBC), and Platelets. Basically, bones in our body make blood. The cell that divides into these different cells start to accumulate within the bone marrow and evetually will stop making these cells. As of now, there is only ONE curative treatment, which is a Stem Cell Transplant.

Currently, there are no available matches in the National Bone Marrow Registry for a Stem Cell transplant to take place. This is not a surprise because there are very few people of South Asian decent who are registered with any bone marrow registry banks. Therefore, our family is making every effort to run bone marrow drives across the nation. But we would really appreciate if you all could register with a Bone Marrow Registry bank.

It is a very simple process to register with a Bone Marrow bank.
1. First, you will have to go to one of the following sites, depending on where you are located:

AMERICA - http://marrow.org/Join/Join_the_Registry.aspx

INDIA - http://register.datriworld.org/Aspx1/NewDonorKit.aspx

2. You must register with the Bone Marrow bank.

3. They will send you a Cheek Swab kit which contains four cotton swabs which you will need to swab your inner cheek.

4. Place the Cotton swabs after you have swabbed your inner cheeks and place in the pre-paid evelope back to the Bone Marrow Registry.

5. If you are a match, you will be notified! :)

This Process takes Several Weeks so please act on this ASAP as we are pressed for time. Even if you are not a match for our dad, you can still potentially save someone else's life!
(Currently 74% of the Bone Marrow Registry are Caucasians and ONLY 7% are South Asian!!!)

If you are a Match...
The process to donate Stem Cells is very simple.
Your blood is removed through a needle in one arm and passed through a machine that separates out the blood-forming cells. The remaining blood is returned to you through the other arm. It just like donating blood, but you will not loose any blood as this is passed back into you after taking the Stem Cells (Blood forming cells) out.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us (matchraviluckoor@gmail.com), our family truly does appreciate all the help and support.

Thank you,
Pavan and Arun Luckoor

Afghanistan: A Land of Awakened People

Afghanistan: A Land of Awakened People- Sri Sri Ravishankar

The war continues to rage in Afghanistan. The enduring violence and conflict has left the nation, its people and economy in ruins. Over the past nine years, billions of dollars have been spent and army commanders have come and gone. Like many of its neighbours in the Middle East, Afghanistan continues to find its existence challenged by the problem of terrorism, fundamentalism and fanaticism. Why is there so much violence and extremism in Afghanistan? Why are the same Muslims that live in India, Indonesia and Malaysia able to live more peacefully with their neighbours? The answer could lie in an incomplete understanding of the history and culture of Afghanistan.
Afghanistan has long stood at the crossroads of a number of cultural and spiritual traditions. Because of its strategic location between the Middle and Far East, it has been an important trading route and meeting place of different cultures for thousands of years. In the past Afghanistan has been home to Zoroastrian, Hindu, Buddhist as well as Muslim communities. All these traditions flourished in harmony -- the country thrived both intellectually and materially because of its openness to various ideas -- until the 20th century. Unfortunately, in this century Afghans have been encouraged or otherwise forced to disown and disrespect their own ancestral heritage, which promoted the values of non-violence and tolerance. Disowning these traditions has resulted in a rise of fanaticism and fundamentalism, which has radicalized an entire generation.
Many people don't realize that the ancient Zoroastrian religion has its roots in present day Afghanistan. Buddhism entered Afghanistan at a very early period, and over the centuries, various rulers, both non-Buddhist and Buddhist, supported the widespread construction of Buddhist monasteries there. Afghanistan was once a centre of Vedic culture. In fact the word Afghanistan comes from the Sanskrit roots, "ahi", "gana", and "sthan", meaning the country of awakened people. A number of Hindu teachers and Buddhists monks of great reputation lived in Afghanistan and founded famous universities and schools of yoga and meditation there. There was a rich tradition of meditation, spirituality, music, dance, and architecture, all of which has been systematically suppressed in recent times and replaced by an aggressive and extremist interpretation of Islam.
When pride becomes associated with aggression in a culture, it can lead youth to believe that theirs is the only right path, and that they have the right to destroy anything that they see as blasphemous and against the will of God. If a person identifies himself primarily with a religion, culture or nationality, he can remain locked in that position, to fight and die for it -- and others will die with him.
Often violence comes with noise. Non-violence happens in silence. People who are violent make huge noise; they make it known. People who are non-violent are quiet. But the time has come for people who are non-violent to make noise so that the violence will quieten down. The message of non-violence has to come loud and clear so that it can be heard from a young age. The way to get rid of fanaticism in Afghanistan and elsewhere is through an education that emphases non-violence and is broad-based, multicultural and multi-religious so that as a child grows up, he or she does not think that only the Bible or the Koran hold the truth. Religious and spiritual leaders in particular need to have a broader understanding of cultures and religions. We have to teach children to embrace non-violence and value human life more than any particular religion or culture.
When we learn to broaden our vision and deepen our roots in this way, people will not fall into a narrow and rigid idea of the will of God; they will not act in aggressive and intolerant ways to defend it. We should encourage the people of Afghanistan to study their own history and to see the value of this broader perspective. Afghanistan thrived for centuries as a centre of learning, commerce and culture. For Afghanistan to survive as both a culture and a country in the present, and to flourish into the future, its youth need to take a look at the wealth of their ancestral history and honour the diversity of their culture.
Only then will the country will be Afghanistan, the Land of the Awakened.

How modern-day gurus are crucified

How modern-day gurus are crucified
Francois Gautier | Agency: DNA | Wednesday, July 11, 2012

One of the greatest and most poignant mysteries of life is how every time man errs and darkness engulfs us, the Supreme, the Divine, or whatever name we give It, sends down upon earth His instruments — the avatars, shaktis, gurus, yogis, saints, vibhutis — to help humanity.

Most of these instruments are vilified in their own time, and only when they die are they deified. In the old days, avatars and gurus were physically tortured: Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross by his own people. Nowadays, there is no need to crucify gurus physically; they are just pilloried by the media. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, one of the most selfless gurus today, whose pranayama techniques have benefited millions, and whose volunteers work tirelessly all over the world to alleviate pain, has been attacked again and again.

Recently, Pierre Monegier, the Delhi-based correspondent of France 2, the French national channel, approached the Art of Living Foundation with an apparently innocuous request for an interview: ‘We are planning to do a story on the importance of religion and spirituality in India.’ The request was granted and Monegier and his reporter, Nida Hasan, were allowed access to every corner of the Bangalore ashram, as well as an interview with SSRS. This is what came out on July 4 in the prime time news of France 2: Sri Sri was introduced by a voice over as the ‘head of a vast flourishing business.’ The Bangalore ashram was described as being ‘a gigantic resort with many hotels and restaurants (absolutely false), and innumerable shops dedicated to Sri Sri Shankar.’

Importance was given to images showing devotees touching SSRS’s feet, or asking him to hug them (with voice), and having tears in their eyes, as Monegier knew it would shock French viewers not used to the Indian ways of devotion. Then, Monegier stated: ‘Most disciples pour into the organisation 10% of their income,’ which is a lie. Finally, of the interview with SSRS, they chose only one quote, which could again shock the French: ‘I am like any other doctor — a specialist who can bring happiness to people… the ultimate goal of money is after all happiness’ and Monegier concluded: ‘Some of these auto-proclaimed popes of Hinduism have a flavor of scandal to them.’

Now this is a serious matter: what if an Indian journalist based in Paris asked for an interview with the Cardinal of Paris, lying about his true intentions, and used the opportunity to defame the Cardinal and French Catholicism in general? His or her visa would not be renewed or could even be revoked at once. Usually, it is very easy to denigrate gurus and Hindus — and probably Monegier and Hasan banked on that. But this time, everybody has reacted: the Art of Living is considering filing a defamation suit against France 2 India; the French embassy in India and the Indian embassy in Paris have been contacted and an Indian government official has said that ‘he was appalled by the France 2 footage.’

The accusation of Gurus being super-rich, running empires, having assets in tax-free countries is nothing new. But what I have seen with my own eyes is that a guru starts with a few disciples, and as the ashram grows, people have to be fed, expenses met. Then he has satsangs, which have to be paid for, departments have to be started to run housing for guests, kitchens, administration… At some point donations are not enough and extra money is sought through sales of DVDs, ayurvedic products, photos... France 2 focused on the shops of the Art of Living ashram in Bangalore, even having a close-up of a cash register in an ayurvedic outlet and a saleswoman with a bundle of rupees in her hands. From the beginning, Sri Sri has tried to revive ayurveda in India, seeing how every third shop here is an allopathic one and that this ancient, wise and unique medical system was slowly dying.

Sri Sri started his own ayurvedic factory under one of his most senior disciples and brought out some pioneering products, which today are marketed under Sri Sri Ayurveda. What’s wrong with that?

True, in the end, a movement like the Art of Living has to be run like a multinational — yet every rupee is poured back into seva projects or into ashrams that are always running into losses.

France 2’s film is highly biased, and is a direct attack on India’s ancient culture. That France is only the 11th biggest investor in India, behind smaller countries like Belgium or Mauritius, is undoubtedly due to the wrong image that is propagated by channels like France 2. Will Pierre Monegier get away with what he has done?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar receives Honorary Doctorate from Nyenrode Business Universiteit

Monday, June 04, 2012
Press release

Breukelen, Netherlands, June 4, 2012 – In honor of its 65th anniversary, Nyenrode Business University has granted an honorary doctorate to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is generally recognized as one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the present day. With his spiritual techniques, interventions and advice, he reaches a large section of the population – from students to world leaders. Thanks to his open and practical approach to spirituality, the subject is now more firmly on the agenda of businesses both large and small throughout the whole world.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (born 1956 in India) is the founder of the Art of Living Foundation, the International Association of Human Values and the World Forum for Ethics and Business. He has also established hundreds of schools and he is currently working to set up a Sri Sri university. Via his organizations, he tries to create a harmonious and more human world in which people everywhere go through life as one family. To achieve this, he utilizes the intelligence and wisdom that everyone has within them. He also devotes his attention to the world of business. Ethical dealing and spiritual techniques are becoming increasingly important in businesses and to reinforce this development, Sri Sri regularly shares his vision with top managers and world leaders, for example during the annual World Economic Forum in Davos.

Prof. Dr. Maurits van Rooijen, Rector Magnificus and CEO of Nyenrode Business Universiteit: “We are pleased to grant an honorary doctorate to Sri Sri because he uniquely represents Nyenrode’s core values in his person, in his work and in his actions. In a practical and tangible way, he connects ethics and spirituality with entrepreneurship and leadership. Among other things, he does this by educating future leaders and guiding the current leaders. His interpretation of stewardship, with a focus on sustainable, responsible, ethical and spiritual dealing, also fits in well with the core values that we want to convey to our students.”

On the subject of the honorary doctorate, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says: “Businesses are surrounded by great uncertainty at present. Now that businesses are more dependent on social and political values, spirituality can give them the strength and enthusiasm to deal more effectively with this. Intuition is important to every aspect of doing business and spirituality nourishes alertness, perception and the ability to observe. In turn, these aspects help to strengthen intuition. Businesses benefit from patience and good relationships with suppliers and customers. Spirituality strengthens these skills and thereby contributes to commercial success.”

Sudarsan Kriya Yoga can help treat psychiatric disorders

Yoga can help treat psychiatric disorders

yogaMany see yoga as a fad or simply a health enhancer. But a number of scientific studies have found it effective as a therapy in treating mental and psychiatric disorders. “Some believe that yoga should be used only for prevention and health promotion and not as a therapy for illnesses,” said B.N. Gangadhar, who heads the psychiatry department at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.
“The reality is that it is being increasingly used as a method for treating various disorders, either alone or as in addition to other therapies, including psychiatric ones,” Gangadhar, also director, Advanced Centre for Yoga at NIMHANS, told IANS. A study co-authored by Gangadhar and three associates examined the effect of yoga as a therapy supplementing medical treatment of schizophrenia, a severe mental condition, which registers failure rates as high as 50 to 60 percent. The condition is ranked as the ninth leading cause of mental disability worldwide. Roughly half of 61 schizophrenia patients were randomly assigned to yoga therapy and the other half to physical exercise for four months. Ten from each group had dropped out during the therapy.
The yoga therapy group showed significantly greater improvement in mental or behavioural disorders than those in the physical exercise group. The yoga group also performed better in social and occupational functioning. Some of the symptoms of schizophrenia are hallucinations (hearing voices), delusions (often bizarre) and disorganized thinking and speech, which render the patient’s life chaotic and distressful. Another study led by Gangadhar found that Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) significantly lowered stress by bringing down high plasma cortisol levels among patients, which indicate stress or illness.
SKY is a method of breath control pioneered by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s Art of Living Foundation. Similarly, M. Javanbakht, a psychiatrist at Iran’s Islamic Azad University, and others found yoga eased mental conditions such as depression and anxiety in women. Participants in Iran were assigned to two groups: one that went through two yoga sessions of 90 minutes each every week for two months and another which did not do any yoga. Women in the yoga group registered a significant decrease in anxiety and depression levels. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), which includes yoga, is now being increasingly used for easing anxiety, stress and depression. Some studies suggest that the percentage of patients availing themselves of CAM could be as high as 60 percent, said Gangadhar.
“A functional brain imaging study at NIMHANS demonstrated that chanting of Aum deactivated certain brain areas bearing on our emotions, particular anger and fear, (and producing a calming effect),” said psychiatry associate professor Shivarama Varambally. “This indicates that Aum chanting may help in emotional control and reduce negative emotions,” Varambally added. Johns Hopkins University’s Arthritis Centre reports that scientific studies on the effect of yoga on rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are “promising,” with results showing “some improvement in joint health, physical functioning, and mental/ emotional well-being”. The centre suggests that such studies show yoga is a “safe and effective” way to increase muscle strength and improve flexibility, areas of core interests to arthritis sufferers. Besides, yoga can increase mental energy and help a patient develop positive feelings and help keep negative feelings in check.
Yoga, derived from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘yoke,’ is designed to integrate one’s body, mind and soul so that the entire system functions harmoniously.
“Many might argue that such a time-tested practice does not require any proof, but contemporary medicine can accept yoga only after thorough validation through scientific tests,” Gangadhar concluded.
